Why does jewelry turn my skin green?

Jewelry can turn your skin green due to a chemical reaction between the metals in the jewelry and the acids or moisture on your skin. This reaction often occurs with jewelry made from copper or copper alloys, such as brass or bronze. When copper comes into contact with sweat, lotion, or skin oils, it can oxidize, forming copper salts, which have a greenish tint. This is harmless, to prevent this, you can coat the jewelry with a clear nail polish.

We use high quality hypoallergenic metals and all our gold and silver plated components have an ant-tarnish coating to help prolong the life of the jewelry and prevent tarnishing.

How do I care for my jewelry?

Keep your jewelry away from moisture and chemicals, remove it before showering, swimming, soaking in water, or working out. Apply skin and beauty products before putting on jewelry and allow them to dry so they don’t damage the surface. Remove jewelry before bed to prevent damage and breakage and store in a closed dry space such as a bag made of soft cloth or a box.

How do you care for turquoise and soft stone jewelry such as opal, howlite, chrysocolla?

To care for turquoise and other soft stone jewelry, it’s important to handle these gemstones with care since they are more porous and susceptible to damage than harder stones. Avoid exposing turquoise to chemicals, perfumes, oils, and lotions, as they can cause discoloration or dull its natural shine. It's best to put on your jewelry after applying cosmetics to reduce direct contact. Additionally, turquoise and soft stones should not be soaked in water or exposed to high humidity for extended periods. When cleaning, gently wipe the jewelry with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the stone's surface. Store your jewelry in a soft pouch or lined jewelry box to protect it from scratches and impacts, keeping it away from harder materials like metals and harder gemstones. With proper care, turquoise and soft stone jewelry can retain its beauty for many years.

What is silver plated brass?

Silver-plated brass is a type of metal that combines a brass core with a thin layer of silver coating. Brass, an alloy made from copper and zinc, is chosen for its strength, durability, and affordability, making it an ideal base material. The silver plating is applied through a process like electroplating, giving the item the bright, shiny appearance of solid silver without the higher cost. This combination offers the aesthetic appeal of silver with the resilience of brass, making it popular in jewelry and decorative items. However, over time, the silver layer may wear away, revealing the brass beneath, though proper care can extend the life and luster of silver-plated brass pieces.

We use high quality hypoallergenic metals that are nickel-free and all our gold and silver plated components have an ant-tarnish coating to help prolong the life of the jewelry and prevent tarnishing.

What is a lab-grown gemstone? Are lab-grown gemstones real?

Lab-grown gemstones, also known as synthetic or cultured gemstones, are gemstones that are created in a controlled laboratory environment using advanced technological processes. These gemstones have the same chemical composition, physical properties, and optical characteristics as their natural counterparts, which are mined from the earth.

How Are Lab-Grown Gemstones Made?

There are several methods to create lab-grown gemstones, the most common being:

  1. Hydrothermal Process: This method mimics the natural conditions under which gemstones form in the earth. It involves dissolving minerals in water at high temperatures and pressures, allowing crystals to grow slowly.
  2. Czochralski Process (Pulling Method): This technique involves melting raw materials and then pulling a seed crystal from the molten material. As the seed is pulled, it cools and solidifies, forming a large crystal.
  3. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD): This process uses gases to deposit carbon onto a substrate, forming diamonds layer by layer. CVD is often used for creating lab-grown diamonds.

Are Lab-Grown Gemstones Real?

Yes, lab-grown gemstones are real in the sense that they possess the same physical and chemical properties as natural gemstones. However, there are some distinctions to consider:

  • Origin: The primary difference between lab-grown and natural gemstones is their origin. Lab-grown gemstones are created artificially, while natural gemstones are formed over millions of years in the earth.
  • Value and Rarity: Lab-grown gemstones are typically less expensive than their natural counterparts because they can be produced in larger quantities and do not carry the same rarity or historical significance.
  • Ethical Considerations: Lab-grown gemstones can be seen as more ethically sourced since they do not contribute to the environmental and social issues sometimes associated with mining natural gemstones.

Lab-grown gemstones are a viable and increasingly popular alternative to natural gemstones, offering beauty and quality at a more accessible price point. They are considered "real" gemstones, but their synthetic origin sets them apart in terms of value and rarity. Whether choosing natural or lab-grown, the best option ultimately depends on personal preferences and values.

What is gold-plated brass?

Gold-plated brass is a type of metal that features a brass core coated with a thin layer of gold. Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, is used for its strength, durability, and affordability, making it a popular choice for the base material. The gold plating typically applied through electroplating, gives the item the rich, shiny appearance of solid gold without the higher cost. This combination allows for the luxurious look of gold while benefiting from the resilience of brass, making it ideal for jewelry and accessories.

We use high quality hypoallergenic metals that are nickel-free and all our gold and silver plated components have an ant-tarnish coating to help prolong the life of the jewelry and prevent tarnishing.

Is a lab-created ruby a real ruby gemstone?

Yes, lab-created rubies are real ruby gemstones in terms of their chemical composition, crystal structure, and physical properties. Lab-created rubies are produced in a controlled environment using the same elements as natural rubies, primarily aluminum oxide (corundum) and chromium to achieve the red color. As a result, lab-grown rubies are identical to natural rubies on a molecular level.

The main difference lies in their origin—lab-created rubies are formed in a laboratory over weeks or months, while natural rubies are created deep within the Earth over millions of years. Lab-grown rubies tend to have fewer inclusions and can be more affordable due to the controlled process of their creation. However, both types are considered genuine rubies, with lab-grown varieties offering a sustainable and budget-friendly alternative while retaining the same hardness, durability, and vibrant color.

For those seeking to differentiate, certificates from gemological labs will indicate whether a ruby is natural or lab-created. Ruby is July's birthstone, known for its striking red color. Rubies symbolize passion, energy, and success, often linked to love, power, and courage.

What is fine silver?

Fine silver, also known as pure silver or .999 silver, is silver that contains 99.9% pure silver and only 0.1% trace elements. Unlike sterling silver, which contains 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper), fine silver is softer and more malleable. Its high purity gives it a bright, lustrous appearance, but it is less durable than sterling silver, making it more prone to scratches and dents. Fine silver is often used in jewelry, coins, and high-quality silverware, where its purity and shine are highly valued.

What are baroque pearls?

Baroque pearls are a type of cultured or natural pearl that have an irregular, non-spherical shape, setting them apart from the perfectly round pearls commonly associated with classic pearl jewelry. Unlike traditional pearls, baroque pearls can take on a wide variety of unique and organic forms, from teardrop and oval shapes to more abstract, free-form designs. This makes each baroque pearl truly one-of-a-kind. Baroque pearls are often found in both freshwater and saltwater varieties, with the freshwater. Their distinctive shapes add character and individuality to jewelry, making them a popular choice for modern, boho chic, and artistic designs. Despite their irregularity, baroque pearls still exhibit the incredible iridescent and lustrous sheen that pearls are known for, often displaying iridescent or multi-toned reflections. Their natural, imperfect forms make baroque pearls ideal for those seeking unique, statement pieces that emphasize natural beauty and craftsmanship.

What is gold stainless steel, and is it good for jewelry?

Yes, gold stainless steel is an excellent choice for jewelry! It refers to stainless steel coated with a layer of gold, that bonds the gold to the steel for a durable, long-lasting finish. Stainless steel is solid and resistant to tarnish, rust, and corrosion, making it ideal for everyday wear. The gold coating provides a luxurious appearance while maintaining the durability of stainless steel, ensuring that gold stainless steel jewelry stays beautiful over time without excessive maintenance. Additionally, it's often hypoallergenic, making it an excellent option for those with sensitive skin.

What is silver filled jewelry?

Silver-filled jewelry refers to pieces made from a base metal, usually brass or copper, that is bonded with a thick layer of sterling silver. This layer is usually 5% or 10% of the total metal weight. Silver-filled jewelry offers a more affordable alternative to solid sterling silver while still providing the look and feel of genuine silver.

The process of bonding silver to the base metal gives silver-filled jewelry durability and a finish similar to sterling silver. Unlike silver-plated jewelry, which has a thin coating of silver, silver-filled pieces are more resistant to tarnishing and wear because the silver layer is significantly thicker. Silver-filled jewelry is often hypoallergenic, making it a great option for those with sensitive skin who want the appearance of solid silver without the higher price tag.

We use high quality hypoallergenic metals that are nickel-free and all our gold and silver plated components have an ant-tarnish coating to help prolong the life of the jewelry and prevent tarnishing.

What is gold-filled jewelry?

Gold-filled jewelry is a high-quality alternative to solid gold that combines the beauty and durability of gold with a more affordable price. It is made by bonding a thick layer of solid gold, typically at least 5% of the item's total weight, to a base metal like sterling silver, brass, or copper using heat and pressure. This process creates a much more durable product than gold plating, where only a thin layer of gold is applied. Gold-filled jewelry is long-lasting and tarnish-resistant, often remaining in great condition even with daily wear. It’s also hypoallergenic, making it a good choice for people with sensitive skin. While gold-filled pieces look and feel like solid gold, they are much more affordable because they use less gold. With its lustrous appearance and lasting quality, gold-filled jewelry offers a beautiful and budget-friendly option for those seeking elegant designs without the high cost of solid gold. In short, gold-filled jewelry offers a balance of beauty, longevity, and affordability, making it a popular choice for those who want the look of gold without the solid gold price.

We use high quality hypoallergenic metals that are nickel-free and all our gold and silver plated components have an ant-tarnish coating to help prolong the life of the jewelry and prevent tarnishing.

Are mother of pearl real pearls?

No, mother of pearl is not the same as a real pearl, but they are closely related. Mother of pearl is the iridescent inner layer of a mollusk’s shell, made from a substance called nacre. This material lines the inside of shells, such as oysters and abalones, and is the same substance that forms pearls, but it doesn't harden into a spherical shape like a real pearl.

What we call "real" pearls are created when a foreign object, like a grain of sand, gets trapped inside the mollusk. The mollusk secretes layers of nacre around the irritant, eventually forming a pearl. While both mother of pearl and pearls are made of nacre, what we all real pearls are prized for their round shape and rarity, while mother of pearl is often used in jewelry, buttons, and decorative objects due to its lustrous, iridescent appearance.

Which earrings are hypoallergenic? What is the most hypoallergenic metal for earrings?

Hypoallergenic earrings are made from materials that are less likely to cause allergic reactions, especially for people with sensitive skin. Common hypoallergenic materials include:

  1. Surgical Stainless Steel: This is a popular choice because it contains low amounts of nickel, reducing the risk of irritation. Surgical-grade stainless steel is durable and resistant to tarnish.
  2. Titanium: Lightweight and highly biocompatible, titanium is one of the most hypoallergenic metals available. It is often recommended for people with severe metal allergies.
  3. Niobium: Like titanium, niobium is a highly hypoallergenic metal that rarely causes reactions. It’s a great alternative for those with sensitive skin.
  4. Platinum: Platinum is a precious metal that is naturally hypoallergenic, making it a luxurious option for sensitive ears.
  5. Gold (14k or higher): Pure gold (18k or higher) is hypoallergenic, but gold with a lower karat value (like 10k or 12k) may contain more nickel or other alloys, which can cause irritation. It’s best to choose 14k gold or higher for hypoallergenic earrings.
  6. Sterling Silver (nickel-free): Sterling silver is usually hypoallergenic as long as it is nickel-free. However, some sterling silver alloys contain small amounts of nickel, so it’s important to ensure the silver is nickel-free if you have allergies.
  7. Plastic or Acrylic: For very sensitive individuals, plastic or acrylic earrings can be a good hypoallergenic option. They’re lightweight and generally free from common allergenic metals.

To ensure earrings are hypoallergenic, look for ones specifically labeled as "nickel-free" or "hypoallergenic," and choose materials known for being allergy-safe.

We use high quality hypoallergenic metals that are nickel-free and all our gold and silver plated components have an ant-tarnish coating to help prolong the life of the jewelry and prevent tarnishing.

What is statement jewelry?

Statement jewelry refers to bold, eye-catching pieces designed to make a strong visual impact. These items are often larger, more ornate, and more colorful than typical everyday jewelry, intended to stand out and become the focal point of an outfit. Statement jewelry can include necklaces, earrings, bracelets, or rings that feature unique designs, oversized elements, vibrant gemstones, or intricate detailing.

The purpose of statement jewelry is to express personal style, add drama or elegance to an outfit, and elevate a simple look. It is often worn for special occasions or to make a fashion statement, allowing the wearer to showcase their individuality and creativity. Whether it's a chunky necklace, large hoop earrings, or a dramatic cocktail ring, statement jewelry serves as a powerful accessory that draws attention.

How do I wear statement jewelry?

Wearing statement jewelry is all about balance and allowing the statement jewelry piece to shine without overwhelming your outfit. Here are some tips on how to wear statement jewelry effectively:

  1. Keep the Outfit Simple: Let the statement jewelry be the focal point by pairing it with simple or neutral-colored clothing. Avoid busy patterns or overly embellished clothes that can compete with the boldness of the jewelry.
  2. Balance the Look: If you're wearing a large statement necklace, keep other accessories, like earrings or bracelets, minimal to avoid a cluttered look. Similarly, if you're wearing bold statement earrings, you might want to skip the necklace or choose a very subtle one.
  3. Choose One Statement Piece: Focus on one standout item at a time. Whether it's a chunky necklace, oversized earrings, or a bold cuff bracelet, pick just one statement piece to be the star of your ensemble.
  4. Match the Occasion: Statement jewelry works best for events or occasions where you want to make an impression, such as parties, weddings, or special outings. For everyday wear, you can still choose smaller statement pieces that are bold but not overwhelming.
  5. Complement Your Neckline: Pair a statement necklace with an outfit that has a complementary neckline. For example, a plunging V-neck or strapless top works well with a large necklace. High necklines work better with statement earrings or bold bracelets.
  6. Mix and Match Styles: Don't be afraid to mix bold statement jewelry with different styles. For example, pair boho chic jewelry with a structured blazer for a contrast of styles, or wear a modern statement necklace with a classic little black dress for a chic, timeless look.
  7. Confidence is Key: The most important tip for wearing statement jewelry is confidence. Since these pieces are meant to stand out, wear them proudly and own the look. The more confident you are, the more the statement piece will enhance your outfit.

By following these guidelines, you can elevate your style while ensuring your statement jewelry remains the star of your outfit. Miel Jewelry has a gorgeous collection of gemstone statement jewelry for you to explore.

Are gemstones and crystals the same?

No, gemstones and crystals are related, but they are not exactly the same. Here's how they differ:

  • Crystals refer to any solid material whose atoms or molecules are arranged in a highly ordered, repeating pattern. Crystals can form naturally in the earth or be grown artificially. They come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and types, including quartz, amethyst, and citrine. Crystals are valued for their natural beauty, metaphysical properties, and use in jewelry.
  • Gemstones, on the other hand, are a broader category that includes certain minerals, rocks, and organic materials that have been cut, polished, and used in jewelry or decorative objects. Gemstones are prized for their rarity, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Many gemstones, like diamonds, emeralds, and sapphires, are made from crystals, but not all crystals are considered gemstones. Some gemstones, like opal or turquoise, are not crystalline in structure.

While many gemstones are formed from crystals, not all crystals are classified as gemstones. The main distinction lies in the gemstone's value, beauty, and use in jewelry, whereas crystals refer to the natural structure and formation of the material.

Both crystals and gemstones make beautiful additions to jewelry, each adding their own unique look and distinct qualities. Crystals are admired for their raw, natural beauty and the variety of shapes and colors they come in, often giving jewelry an organic, earthy, or mystical vibe. They can be left in their natural form or polished to bring out their shine and clarity, making them perfect for boho chic, spiritual, or minimalist jewelry styles. Crystals are also known for their metaphysical properties, with many people believing they offer healing energies or positive vibrations, adding a deeper meaning to the pieces they adorn.

Gemstones, on the other hand, are typically more refined and are valued for their rarity, brilliance, and luxurious appeal. They are often cut and polished to enhance their natural beauty and sparkle, giving jewelry an elegant, timeless, or glamorous touch. Gemstones like diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires are often associated with luxury and are considered status symbols, while more semi-precious stones like amethyst, topaz, or opal add vibrant color and individuality to designs.

Both crystals and gemstones allow for endless creativity and expression in jewelry design, whether you want to create a bold, standout piece or something more delicate and personal. The combination of their natural beauty and unique properties ensures that each piece of jewelry is truly one-of-a-kind.

What is boho chic style? What is bohemian jewelry?

Boho chic style, often referred to as simply "boho" or "bohemian jewelry" is a fashion and lifestyle aesthetic that blends bohemian influences with modern, chic elements. It draws inspiration from various cultures, particularly from the free-spirited, artistic, and nomadic lifestyles of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as elements from nature, folk, and vintage styles. The "chic" aspect adds a modern, polished touch, elevating the relaxed bohemian look to something more sophisticated and stylish.

Key features of boho chic style include:

  1. Flowy and Relaxed Silhouettes: Loose, airy garments like maxi dresses, peasant tops, wide-leg pants, and oversized cardigans are staples of the boho look, promoting comfort and movement.
  2. Earthy and Natural Tones: Boho chic fashion often incorporates earthy tones like browns, creams, beiges, and olive greens, along with pops of vibrant colors such as turquoise, mustard, or deep reds.
  3. Natural Materials and Textures: The style emphasizes natural fabrics like cotton, linen, suede, and leather, as well as accessories made from wood, feathers, and beads. Layering textures like crochet, fringe, and lace is also common.
  4. Eclectic and Global Patterns: Boho chic embraces bold patterns, often inspired by global textiles such as paisley, florals, tribal prints, and ethnic designs. This gives the style an artistic, handmade feel.
  5. Statement Jewelry: Jewelry plays a significant role in boho chic style. Pieces often feature natural stones, crystals, and metals, with popular choices being turquoise, silver, and gold. Layered necklaces, large hoop earrings, bangles, and oversized rings are commonly worn.
  6. Vintage and Retro Influences: Boho chic often pulls from vintage styles, incorporating retro hats, belts, and sunglasses. It also mixes in elements from different time periods, such as the 70s hippie vibe combined with modern, sleek accessories.
  7. Effortless yet Put-Together: While boho chic looks relaxed and free-spirited, it also incorporates a sense of style and refinement, giving the wearer an effortlessly put-together look. This might involve pairing a flowy dress with a structured leather jacket or adding polished accessories to balance the laid-back vibe.

Boho chic is more than just a fashion trend; it’s a way of expressing individuality, creativity, and a connection to nature, making it a popular choice for both casual and festival wear as well as more elegant, bohemian-inspired outfits.

What is minimalist jewelry?

Minimalist jewelry is a style of jewelry characterized by its simplicity, clean lines, and understated elegance. It focuses on subtle and delicate designs rather than bold, attention-grabbing pieces, and often emphasizes quality craftsmanship and the beauty of the materials used.

Minimalist jewelry is versatile, timeless, and designed to complement any outfit without overpowering it, making it perfect for both everyday wear and special occasions.

Key characteristics of minimalist jewelry include:

  1. Simplicity: Minimalist jewelry typically features simple, clean designs without excessive ornamentation or intricate details. The focus is on the essential form of the piece, with no extra embellishments.
  2. Delicate and Lightweight: Pieces tend to be small and dainty, such as thin bands, petite pendants, and slender chains. They are often lightweight and comfortable to wear.
  3. Geometric Shapes: Minimalist jewelry frequently incorporates basic shapes like circles, squares, triangles, and bars. These geometric forms are sleek and modern, contributing to the jewelry's understated appeal.
  4. Neutral Tones and Metals: Minimalist jewelry often uses classic, neutral tones such as silver, gold, rose gold, or white gold. The emphasis is typically on high-quality metals, with occasional accents of diamonds or gemstones in a subtle, restrained manner.
  5. Versatility: Due to its simple design, minimalist jewelry is incredibly versatile and can be worn with a wide range of outfits, from casual daywear to formal evening attire. Pieces can easily be layered for a more personalized look without becoming overwhelming.
  6. Timelessness: The clean and classic look of minimalist jewelry makes it timeless. It transcends trends, allowing pieces to remain stylish and relevant for years.
  7. Focus on Quality and Materials: Minimalist pieces often emphasize the quality of the material rather than intricate designs. Whether it's a fine gold necklace, a sterling silver bracelet, or a pair of diamond-stud earrings, the material itself takes center stage.

Minimalist jewelry is ideal for those who appreciate refined, subtle elegance and prefer jewelry that enhances rather than dominates their look. It complements a modern, understated wardrobe and can also be easily mixed and matched with bolder statement pieces for a more dynamic style.

How do i wear minimalist jewelry?

Wearing minimalist jewelry is all about achieving a sleek, understated look that enhances your outfit without overwhelming it. Here are some tips on how to style minimalist jewelry effectively:

  • Opt for simple designs like stud earrings, delicate necklaces, or thin bracelets. Look for items made from high-quality materials like gold, silver, or rose gold.

  • If you want to layer, keep it subtle. For necklaces, consider wearing a couple of delicate chains of varying lengths. For rings, stack thin bands together or wear one statement piece with a couple of simple ones.

  • Combine different minimalist pieces to create a cohesive look. For example, pair a dainty necklace with small hoop earrings and a thin bracelet for a polished appearance.

  • Choose jewelry that complements your clothing rather than competes with it. Minimalist jewelry pairs well with simple, monochromatic outfits and can add a touch of elegance to casual wear.

  • Ensure that your jewelry fits your frame. For example, if you have a petite build, opt for smaller pieces that won’t overpower your look. Conversely, if you’re taller, you can experiment with slightly larger minimalist designs.

  • If you're wearing statement earrings, keep the rest of your jewelry minimal. Alternatively, if you're showcasing a bold necklace, skip large bracelets or rings.

  • Minimalist jewelry is all about simplicity and elegance. Wear your pieces with confidence, as this will enhance your overall look.

  • Minimalist jewelry is versatile and suitable for both casual and formal occasions. Feel free to wear it daily or elevate your evening outfits with elegant pieces.

By following these styling tips, you can effortlessly incorporate minimalist jewelry into your wardrobe, creating a refined and chic aesthetic that highlights your personal style but wont overpower your look.

What are raw gemstones?

Raw gemstones, also known as uncut or rough gemstones, are natural stones that have not been polished, shaped, or treated in any way. They are extracted directly from the earth and retain their natural form and appearance, showcasing their unique colors, textures, and inclusions. These gemstones may have jagged edges and an irregular shape, providing a more organic look compared to their polished counterparts.

Many jewelry enthusiasts and collectors appreciate raw gemstones for their authenticity and connection to nature. Each stone tells a story through its imperfections and variations, making them distinct and one-of-a-kind. Raw gemstones are often used in bohemian-style jewelry, where their natural beauty is celebrated and embraced.

In addition to their aesthetic appeal, raw gemstones are believed to hold various metaphysical properties, with each type of stone associated with different meanings and benefits. For example, amethyst is thought to promote calmness and clarity, while rose quartz is linked to love and healing. This adds an extra layer of significance for those who choose to wear or work with these natural treasures.

What is gold leaf(ed) and rose gold leaf(ed)?

Gold Leaf is a thin sheet of gold that is hammered or rolled to an extremely thin consistency, often less than 1/1000th of an inch. It is used in various applications, including art, architecture, and jewelry, to provide a luxurious gold finish. Gold leaf can be applied to surfaces such as gemstones, wood, metal, or glass using an adhesive, creating a stunning effect due to its reflective qualities. In jewelry, it can be used to accentuate pieces, adding a rich, warm glow.

Rose Gold Leaf, on the other hand, is a variation of gold leaf that has a pink or reddish hue. This color is achieved by alloying gold with copper and sometimes silver. The resulting blend gives rose gold its characteristic warm tone, making it a popular choice in jewelry design. Like traditional gold leaf, rose gold leaf can be used for gilding and decorative purposes, offering a unique and romantic aesthetic that enhances various artistic and jewelry pieces. Both types of leaf are cherished for their beauty and ability to elevate the visual appeal of the items they adorn.

What is silver leaf(ed)?

Silver Leaf in jewelry design refers to ultra-thin sheets of silver that are meticulously applied to create a stunning, reflective finish. This technique allows artisans to incorporate the luxurious appearance of silver into their pieces without the weight or cost of solid silver. Silver leaf is often used in various jewelry applications, such as on pendants, earrings, and rings, providing an elegant, modern aesthetic that enhances the overall design. Its bright, shiny surface can catch the light beautifully, adding depth and dimension to any piece. However, due to its delicate nature, proper care is essential to maintain its brilliance; exposure to moisture and air can cause tarnishing, resulting in a patina that some may find desirable. This unique quality makes silver leaf a versatile choice for jewelry makers who wish to create intricate and visually striking pieces while showcasing their craftsmanship.

Can you wear gold plated jewelry in the shower?

It's generally not recommended to wear gold-plated jewelry in the shower. Here's why:

  • Water and humidity can cause the gold plating to wear off faster over time, especially with frequent exposure.
  • Shampoos, soaps, and body washes may contain chemicals that can tarnish or damage the gold layer.
  • Hard water and chlorine in tap water can also cause discoloration and reduce the lifespan of the gold plating.

To maintain the longevity and shine of gold-plated jewelry, it's best to remove it before showering or swimming and store it in a dry, clean place.

We use high quality hypoallergenic metals that are nickel-free and all our gold and silver plated components have an ant-tarnish coating to help prolong the life of the jewelry and prevent tarnishing.

What is the difference between gold-plated and vermeil?

The main differences between gold-plated and vermeil jewelry lie in the thickness of the gold layer, the base metal used, and the quality of the jewelry. Here's a breakdown:

1. Gold-Plated Jewelry:

  • Gold Layer: The gold layer is usually thin and can wear off more quickly. The thickness of gold can vary.
  • Base Metal: The base metal is typically a less expensive material like brass, copper, or stainless steel.
  • Durability: Gold-plated jewelry is more prone to tarnishing and wearing over time, especially with frequent use or exposure to water and chemicals.
  • Price: It's more affordable due to the thin layer of gold and less expensive base metals.

2. Vermeil Jewelry:

  • Gold Layer: Vermeil has a much thicker gold layer, typically at least 2.5 microns, making it more durable and longer-lasting.
  • Base Metal: The base metal in vermeil is always sterling silver, which is a higher-quality material than what's often used in standard gold-plated pieces.
  • Durability: Because of the thicker gold layer and sterling silver base, vermeil is more durable than regular gold-plated jewelry and less prone to tarnishing.
  • Price: Vermeil is more expensive than gold-plated jewelry but usually less expensive than solid gold jewelry.

Summary:

  • Gold-plated: Thin gold layer over base metal like brass or copper, less durable, more affordable.
  • Vermeil: Thick gold layer over sterling silver, more durable, higher quality.

We use high quality hypoallergenic metals that are nickel-free and all our gold and silver plated components have an ant-tarnish coating to help prolong the life of the jewelry and prevent tarnishing.

What does Bezel mean?

A bezel is a setting in jewelry that holds a gemstone or other item in place. It consists of a thin metal rim that encircles the stone, securing it tightly to the jewelry. Bezels can provide a sleek, modern look while offering protection to the edges of the gemstone.

Types of Bezels:

  1. Full Bezel: The metal completely surrounds the gemstone, offering maximum security and protection. It gives a smooth, polished appearance and is popular in contemporary jewelry.
  2. Partial or Half Bezel: The metal encircles only part of the gemstone, allowing more of the stone to be exposed, which enhances light reflection and gives a more delicate look.
  3. Prong Bezel: This combines a traditional bezel with prongs. In a prong bezel, the gemstone is held by metal prongs that rise up and curve around the edge of the stone, often securing it along with the bezel. This provides a combination of the sleek bezel look with the light-enhancing exposure of prongs.

Each bezel style offers different levels of protection, visibility, and aesthetic, depending on the design of the jewelry piece.

What are drop earrings?

Drop earrings are a style of earrings that "drop" or hang below the earlobe, offering a versatile and often more dramatic look compared to studs. They can feature a variety of designs, from simple chains with a small gemstone or charm at the end, to more elaborate and detailed pieces. Unlike chandelier earrings, which have multiple layers or parts, drop earrings typically have a single or linear design that dangles downward.

They can range in length from short and delicate to longer, bolder designs. Drop earrings are popular for both everyday wear and formal occasions, adding an elegant touch to any outfit.

What are dangle earrings?

Dangle earrings are a type of earring that hangs freely below the earlobe and can swing or move as you move. Unlike drop earrings, which may have a more stationary design, dangle earrings are typically longer and feature a variety of intricate designs, charms, gemstones, or beads that create movement. They can vary in length, from just below the earlobe to shoulder-grazing styles.

Dangle earrings are often chosen for their eye-catching and dramatic effect, making them a great accessory for both casual and formal occasions. Their movement adds a sense of elegance and flair to any look.

What are chandelier earrings?

Chandelier earrings are a type of earring known for their intricate, multi-level design that resembles the shape of a chandelier. These earrings are typically long and often feature layers of gemstones, beads, or metal details cascading down from the earlobe, creating a luxurious, eye-catching look.

Chandelier earrings are popular for formal occasions due to their dramatic and elegant appearance, adding sparkle and flair to outfits like evening gowns or cocktail dresses. Their bold, ornate design makes them a standout piece, perfect for adding glamour to any look.

What are hoop earrings?

Hoop earrings are a classic and versatile type of jewelry characterized by their circular or semi-circular design, typically worn through the earlobe. They come in various sizes, materials, and styles, making them suitable for different occasions, from casual to formal. Here's a breakdown of different types of hoop earrings:

1. Dainty Hoop Earrings

Dainty hoop earrings are delicate and often feature a thin profile, making them perfect for everyday wear. They usually have a small diameter and can be adorned with subtle embellishments like tiny gemstones or minimalistic designs. Dainty hoops are ideal for layering with other earrings and offer a refined, understated look.

2. Small Hoop Earrings

Small hoop earrings are slightly larger than dainty hoops but still maintain a modest size. They typically range from about 1 to 2 inches in diameter and are often made from various materials like gold, silver, or stainless steel. Small hoops can be worn alone for a classic look or combined with other earrings for a trendy stacked effect.

3. Bold Hoop Earrings

Bold hoop earrings make a statement with their larger size and often thicker design. Ranging from 2 inches to several inches in diameter, these hoops can be crafted from metals, acrylics, or embellished with intricate designs, colors, or patterns. Bold hoops are perfect for those looking to add a touch of drama to their outfit and are great for special occasions or nights out.

4. Statement Hoop Earrings

Statement hoop earrings take boldness to the next level, featuring unique shapes, oversized dimensions, and eye-catching details. These earrings might incorporate materials like feathers, beads, or intricate metalwork. Statement hoops are designed to stand out and often become the focal point of an outfit, allowing wearers to express their individual style.

Materials and Styles:

Hoop earrings can be made from a variety of materials, including:

  • Metal: Gold, silver, rose gold, and stainless steel are popular choices, with finishes ranging from polished to matte.
  • Acrylic or Resin: These materials can create colorful, lightweight hoops perfect for a playful look.
  • Gemstones and Beads: Some hoops feature gemstones, crystals, or beads for added sparkle and personality.

Whether you prefer the subtle elegance of dainty hoops or the bold impact of statement pieces, there’s a style of hoop earring to suit every taste and occasion. Their versatility allows them to be worn alone for a simple look or layered with other earrings for a trendy, curated ear.
